Brenda Martinez fears that she may lose everything, including her children. She is a “Dreamer,” an undocumented immigrant currently protected from deportation by DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Last fall, the Trump administration announced that the program was ending and the temporary permits could not be renewed, which meant that Brenda could face deportation when her permit expired in March 2019. On Jan. 9, a federal judge blocked Trump’s action, but even as the court battle continues, the possibility of permanent protection rests only with Congress. Brenda shares her story, her hopes and fears, and what it is like to have her life “hanging by a thread.”
