The Incarnation and Enculturation

Around 3,600 nativity scenes are owned by the University of Dayton, and the collection is believed to be the largest in North America. The sets come from about 100 different countries and demonstrate how communities often interpret the faith through their own cultural perspective, a process called enculturation. Father Johann Roten, SM, who curates the exhibit, says that enculturation is one step beyond the incarnation, when God became man, because in enculturation God integrates himself into each specific culture.
