Schoolchildren help burn palm branches to ashes to prepare for the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday is celebrated on March 6, when Catholics traditionally have ashes imposed on their foreheads in the shape of a cross. As the young Catholics of St. Bartholomew Parish in Columbus, Indiana learn, the ashes are created from the palms used in a different celebration – Palm Sunday – and this palms-to-ashes transition is rich in meaning.
